Volunteering and service are wonderful ways to connect with your community
At WayForth, we embrace the phrase “People Helping People.” Assisting others and giving back are core fundamentals of our company.
As we start the new year, we want to encourage everyone to give back to their community in some way. In fact, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Of Service is on Monday, January 16 and is a federal holiday dedicated to being active in your community and helping others.
Volunteering your service can benefit you as well as others. It can help you feel connected to other people and the world around you. It can also move you out of your comfort zone and encourage you to see others in a new way. A bonus is that you can make new friends who are interested in the same things as you or provide you with a new perspective.
Making these meaningful connections is also good for your wellbeing. When you focus on others, you feel happier and can experience less depression. It also gives you a sense of purpose and confidence that can help you in your family and work life.
To help get you started, we’ve assembled a list of ideas for large and small ways you can make a difference.
Small gestures
- Pick up litter in your neighborhood or local park
- Offer to rake or shovel snow for an elderly neighbor or someone who might need a hand
- Make cards for seniors in a local residence or for people in the hospital
- Write letters to people in the armed services
- Knit, sew or craft something for someone living in a shelter
- Donate to your local food bank
- Plant a tree or flowers to brighten up your city
- Volunteer as a chaperone for a local school trip
Group activities
- Get together with friends to cheer at the Special Olympics in your town
- Organize a food drive at work or a local school
- Lead a toy drive during the holidays

Ongoing projects

You can also support a cause or organization that speaks to you and your interests. If you love cats, volunteer at a cat rescue. Or if you like running, volunteer to coach a middle school team. Or get involved with a non-profit organization such as the Alzheimer’s Association. When you volunteer with something that inspires you or means something to you, you’ll be more engaged and apt to stick to your commitment. Let us know how you’re serving your community this year!
