Make the most of the shortest day of the year
As the light fades earlier and earlier in December, it signals the coming of the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. Winter solstice is the name of the shortest day of the year (and longest night) and in 2022 is celebrated on December 21.
A “solstice” is a celestial event during which the sun is at its highest or lowest point relative to the Earth’s equator. That means that during the winter solstice the northern hemisphere is tilted furthest away from the sun, resulting in the shortest period of daylight.
A bit of history
Ancient people from China to the indigenous North Americans celebrated this special day as the eventual turning (and return) of the sun. Feasts, festivals and unique rituals were all part of this holiday. Whether it was lighting fires to symbolize the sun in Scandinavia, sharing food in Poland or throwing wild parties in ancient Rome, different cultures had a variety of ways to celebrate this important change in the sky.
Today, some use the date to mark the countdown to Christmas. Others take the time to learn about the tilt of the sun and explore the wonders of the universe. Still others like to use the winter solstice as a time to reflect and renew themselves in a physical or spiritual way.
How you can observe the day
As the year comes to a close and the winter solstice is upon us, it can also be a time to celebrate your successes and the big decisions that helped shape your year. Focusing on what matters to you is a good way to ground yourself. Revel in this time of year and take time to rest your mind, body and soul.
Suggestions to refresh yourself during winter solstice:
- Get some fresh air
- Sit outside and observe nature
- Log off social media and give yourself a break from your tech devices
- Try meditation in quiet, clutter-free space
- Read a book
- Listen to some favorite music
- Practice some breathing exercises: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 counts then exhale for 7 seconds
Some people use ancient traditions as a springboard for their own celebrations.
This includes:
- Lighting a yule log or fire and enjoying its warmth and light
- Making a special meal that warms and nourishes your body
- Creating a special wreath to connect with nature
- Sharing food and drink with loved ones
You can also decide to let some more light into your life. This can be done by lighting your fireplace inside or a fire pit outdoors, using candles to create a warm atmosphere or simply by hanging twinkle lights or holiday lights both inside and out.
