Autumn is here and for most of us that means temperate fall days along with cooler mornings and comfortable evenings. Taking a walk or bike ride, puttering around in the garden or even just relaxing on the porch are great ways to take advantage of this time of the year.

But, did you also know that being outside and enjoying nature is good for your health and wellness?

Step out your front door

Spending time in nature can help relieve stress, bring down blood pressure and reduce fear, anger and depression. This means you can get both physical and emotional benefits from just stepping out your front door. Even taking a quick hour outside at lunch can make a big difference in your day. It gives your mind a break and can lead to a new perspective on what’s happening in your day.

Science points the way

According to an article on the American Psychological Association website, nature can help both our mental health and cognition.

“There is mounting evidence, from dozens and dozens of researchers, that nature has benefits for both physical and psychological human wellbeing,” says Lisa Nisbet, PhD, a psychologist at Trent University in Ontario, Canada, who studies connectedness to nature. “You can boost your mood just by walking in nature, even in urban nature. And the sense of connection you have with the natural world seems to contribute to happiness even when you’re not physically immersed in nature.”

Get your vitamin D

You can also get vitamin D, an important nutrient, from the sun with regular exposure. Just don’t forget the sunscreen! And catching some rays might have to do a bit with lowering your blood pressure. TripOutside.com mentions a report that suggests exposure to the sun may widen your blood vessels, which in turn could lower blood pressure numbers. Being outside and active can also mean better sleep at night.

How can you add nature into your day?

Even on busy days, it’s easy to get some outside time. Whether you’re in an urban setting, living in the wide, open spaces or near the beach, make time for yourself.

  • Find a nearby park. Even one in the city has trees, birds, grass and sun.
  • Sit outside on your porch. Tilt your face up and feel the warmth of the sun as you relax.
  • Talk a walk. Stroll around the block or tackle an afternoon hike.
  • Plan a picnic. Everything tastes better outside.
  • Take the dog or a grandchild out to play. Hopscotch, anyone?
  • Do some gardening. Working with flowers and plants is an easy way to a better mood.

This fall, make time for yourself and enjoy some time outside. Your health and wellbeing will thank you.
