1. Routine equals comfort.

Try to keep your pet’s routine as close to normal as possible before and after the move. Pets find reassurance in their routines. Try not to move their litter boxes, beds or food bowls as you pack.

2. Make sure they’re microchipped.

If you haven’t already, get your pet microchipped at least two weeks before you move. If they’re already chipped, call the chip company to double check they have all your information correctly entered (have them read it to you) and be sure to update your contact info with your new address and phone number.

3. Verify and update ID tags.

If your changing your phone number, make to get your pet’s tag updated. Have the pet wear the microchip ID tag as well your personal ID tag.

4. Pack for your pet.

Place your pet’s food, dishes, and other important belongings in an easily accessible box and label them clearly.

5. Create a place for them.

Moving day may be a bit stressful for most pets, but there are things you can do to soothe them and keep them calm. On moving day, while the movers are loading up or unloading your belongings, choose a room to keep them in and turn it into a little oasis, with their pet bed, food and water, some toys and some classical music playing.

6. Make sure to put a sign on that room’s door so movers don’t open it by mistake.

If it’s an option, you can have them stay at a friend or family’s home for a few hours, especially if it’s a local move.

7. Let them explore.

Just wait until AFTER movers and move managers have left. Let your pet find their own way round and give them time to adjust. If your pet is older, it may take them longer to adjust, but most pets will jump right into their new routine. Just know that as long as you’re by their side, they’ll be happy.
