Planning your move

While some moves may happen quickly when it’s a job relocation or a parent moving to a senior community, most transitions are planned out in advance.

First, decide if you can choose the time of year you are moving. Certain times of the year may offer more flexibility and savings. Spring is the most popular time, but it may also incur the most waiting time and subsequently higher fees.

Second, estimate how much you want to spend. By understanding your budget, you can manage what tasks you can hire professionals to help with and what you, family and friends can accomplish.

Third, get estimates from different moving companies. It’s important to learn what each company offers and how much the process will cost. The lowest price may sound good, but if the company is merely picking up boxes and driving them to the next location and stacking them inside, it may not be the best value for someone who wants assistance packing and unpacking, etc. Also don’t be afraid to ask if there are any special discounts available such as price breaks for veterans or teachers.

Organize your items

One rule of thumb to help you save money and stress is to never move what you don’t need or want. This means downsizing, donating and discarding before the moving team starts.

You can organize a garage sale, ask family and friends if they want any items and find local organizations that will take furniture, clothing or other items. Sorting and discarding items means they won’t be moved, and it could lighten the load and cut down your moving price.

You can also decide if you want to sell some items via auction to make some money. This process means someone else handles all the items, finds the buyers and collects the cash. Usually, an auction house takes a percentage of the sale, but having them handle the process is valuable for you if you don’t have time or energy to do it.

You can also use this time to gather any moving supplies like boxes, tape and  bubble wrap. To save money, you can ask friends and neighbors if they have any boxes from online shopping or a recent move. Some Facebook groups such as Buy Nothing may also have offers for free boxes and wrapping materials. Local grocery stores can also be a source of boxes.

Find the right moving company

When you are comparing prices for various moving companies, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. You will want a company that has a good reputation and that will take care of your things as they move from one location to another. If you have items that are lost or damaged, it could cost you in the end to repair or replace your valuables.

Another factor to consider is your time. If you choose a team of movers that needs constant supervision or multiple phone calls to get things done, you might save money, but your time is taken up managing the project.

Choose a company that will do what you need them to do and that has the experience to do it all correctly. An organization like WayForth can help from the very start with planning, downsizing, packing, unpacking and settling in. Plus, you can customize the services that work best for you so you can use your money and time wisely.
